Get Switched On with Science!

Imagine building cool robots and gadgets that light up and move, all while helping our planet! That’s what’s happening at the Switched On Indigenous Young Inventors event, part of National Science Week!

We’re bringing together 90 young people aged 10-12 from northern Adelaide, along with awesome mentors and university students. You’ll get to use special “Inventors Tool Kits” to program tiny computers – the brains of all sorts of electronics, from smart toys to cars! Our latest invention, “runlinc,” lets you create amazing projects using just a web browser. An AI Assistant will help write code and connect sensors. It’s like magic, but it’s science!

The day kicks off at 9 am at Lake Windemere B-7 School’s IT-equipped gym. You’ll see cool past projects like a talking robot and a quadcopter. Then, it’s your turn! You’ll work in teams to design, build, and program hands-on science projects with themes like saving energy and fighting climate change. Think giant boomerangs with flashing LEDs or interactive models that relate to sustainability!

By 2:30 pm, you’ll have your own amazing creations to take back to school. These working electronic models will then be entered into the Royal Adelaide Show Inventors Competitions! Imagine your project displayed for thousands of people to see, inspiring everyone about the power of hands-on science. Teams  will come to The Royal Adelaide Show to talk to judges and the public about your inventions and maybe even win prize ribbons!

This isn’t just about learning cool stuff; it’s about showing everyone how fun and exciting science can be, and how it can help our communities. Plus, you’ll meet university students who are studying science and engineering – they’ll be your role models! Get ready to explore, create, and get “switched on” to the amazing world of STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine)!
